October Newsletter

West Wight Timebank October Newsletter

We are running a stall at Totland School's Christmas Fayre on Friday 23rd November to raise funds for the TimeBank. We would love it if you have any Christmassy items to donate, children's clothes pretty decorations, toiletries, that kind of thing or anything which would go towards filling a stocking. Perhaps you're a great knitter and have a Chrismassy scarf to donate, or maybe you have a little time to sew some crafts or make a table centre, we're sure there's plenty of talent out there! N.B. We have agreed not to sell anything edible as the PTA run their own cake and produce stalls. One of our Timebank members, Avril, is leading this fundraising project for us.

Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival

For the Timebank’s Christmas Tree Festival, we would to symbolise the TB by having symbols around the tree or on the tree to illustrate the kind of help members offer from gardening, dog walking, book groups to baking e.g. a trowel, a dog lead, some books, a wooden spoon. If you would like to design any of these then these would be gratefully received. We have asked some of the school children to design clock faces too.

Our new Community Interest Community (CIC), under which the Timebank sits, has now joined the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce. As one of the benefits of joining, they offer NHS Health Checks for the 40 - 74 age group’ in the workplace. The criteria are as follows: - Aged between 40-74 - Be living or working on the Island - Not have received an NHS health check in the past 5 years (either with their own GP or the Chamber Health team) - Not on medication for heart disease, high blood pressure, cholesterol, atrial fibrillation, stroke, kidney disease or diabetes. If there are at least 3 people, an advisor can be sent to a location in the West Wight. If less than 3 people, individuals can attend the Chamber in Newport, but must book through Sally before the end of October please. There will also be other training opportunities available which will be free of charge for Timebank members including, First Aid, Safeguarding and health and safety. We will let you know more as the details become available, but do let Sally know if you want to undertake any of these courses.

Isn’t if frustrating… when you have to wait in all day for a parcel.

If anyone would like to offer to ‘house sit’ and wait in at someone’s home for a delivery please let Sally know.

Group Gardening

We had a lovely morning gardening with John, one of our members.

 Community Cook Up

I would like to invite you to join us for our first ‘Meet and Eat’ Community Cook up on Friday 2nd November at 11.45 am at St Saviours Holy Family Centre, Weston Lane, Totland. It will be an opportunity to have a photo together, and I will invite the County Press. You are of course most welcome to stay to try the food we prepare after this. Here is a little information which we will be using to publicise the events, please do feel free to share the below. The West Wight Timebank and The Real Junk Food Project Isle of Wight have joined forces for their first "Community Cook Up" in Totland St Saviours Church Hall which will be held on November 2nd from 12 till 2pm, and thereafter the first Friday of each month. All are welcome, so please do come along and support this community event which is focused on addressing the unnecessary continuance of food waste in our country, but will also allow us to meet, eat and enjoy the company of others. The food we use, will be made up of at least 90% food which would otherwise end up in landfill, and is being donated locally by the Coop in Freshwater, Sainsbury’s in Freshwater and the Village Shop in Brighstone.

As the food comes to us on the day, we have no idea what surprises we will have in store for you. The menu is being created by our imaginative chef on the day Mel, who will be supported by a team of Timebank volunteers. There will be no charges made for food other than "pay as you feel" donations or offers of help on the day or in the future if preferred. Volunteers are still needed to chop the veg. Allotment We had 7 Timebank members at our autumn clear up last Friday. The next session at the allotment will be on Friday 9 th November from 9:30-11:30am. All are welcome to attend.
